Kaukai are spirits of fertility, harvest and earth ritches

Kaukai are thumb-high small persons of both sexes.

They wear green, blue or red clothes, often just rags. You may see and hear them but they can also turn invisible. They usually turn up in pairs and only seldom alone.

They bring luck for the house and gifts for the people. They are very hard working but are also fond of tricks and practical jokes.

Kaukai are not immortal – can burn in fire or can be struck by Perkunas‘ lightning.

Monai Kaukutis | Monai Kaukas | Mythical creature | Baltic mythology |

Kaukai live in forests and undergrounds. They appear to peoples house unexpectedly with small gifts – some hay or splinters. If a house lord accepts the gift, so do Kaukai appear. They help finish tasks around the house, bring berries and mushrooms from nearby forests and so on.

As a guest in the house, you may hope to see them under full moon or during a hazy day.

People used to care for Kaukai and feed them. To repay  Kaukai for their service, you should offer them some new clothes. That would make Kaukai sad for they take it as a signal that their services are no longer needed and disappear.
