A lady in red, sometimes also with wings of fire.

Kind, caring and responsible.

She lives in fire, sometimes she is the fire.

Gabija looks after and cares for the fire so that it would not spread in the house.

Monai Gabija | Baltic mythology godess |

People used to respect fire a lot and care for it would not go out.

You may not cast dirty things, spit on fire or stamp it with your feet.

In case of accidental contamination of fire, one had to clean it – spray a bit of clean water on it.

If embers would fall out of the fire, you should put them right back again and not stomp them with your feet for you may anger Gabija gravely.

Up to this day if one doesn’t look after the fire, doesn’t respect it – offended Gabija may cause a blaze.

Gabija has a festival om the 5th of February each year. One would bake bread and give it to the fire praying to the goddess not to blaze one’s home.

It helps fight evil.
