Perkūnas or Thunder

God of thunder and lightning that lives in the clouds

He has many other names for a reason

He is a stout elderly man with long gray hair and ginger beard. He has a wreath of fire and a red cloak on. He carries a stone axe under his belt and in his hands – iron bow with a lightning arrow.

Energetic and impatient, but just. He does not forgive a crime.

When enraged he makes lightning and thunder. This is how he wakes up earth and life itself every spring.

He may ride over the sky in his chariot and shoot his lightning arrows or throw his stone hammer to the ground – this is his way to hunt the devil. That unfortunately can lead to burned houses and dead cattle.

Sometimes he can walk among the people and catch gossip and news.

Perkūnas cares for people and sometimes looks after them. During drought he may beat holes in the ground and fill them with water.

In the olden days people used to sacrifice cattle to Perkūnas.

To safeguard your house from lightning you should mark it with branches or Christmas tree or shingles.

Children were forbidden from saying his name and the grownups would refrain from it too, especially during storms – just in case he goes by with lightning in his hands.

When you hear Perkūnas thundering – go inside, don’t stay alone in the fields and don’t hide under tall trees.
